Mari Boine wurde als Mari Boine Persen am 8. November 1956 in Norwegen, im Dorf Gámehisnjárga, in der Karasjok-Kommune, die Teil der wunderschönen Finnmark-Region ist, geboren und gehört zu der nordischen Minderheit der Sami (Saami)- Bevölkerung. Beide Eltern waren Saami und lebten vom Fischen und vom Landbau.
In Ihrer Kindheit und Jugend erlebte sie die noch relativ unberührte Natur der arktischen Finnmark, aber auch Rassismus und Diskriminierung, unter anderem von einer christlichen Sekte, die die Saami-Bevölkerung in ihrer Umgebung ernsthaft diskriminierte. Beispielsweise wurde der samische Joik als “Werk des Teufels” angesehen.
Ihr Schulgang stand im starken Kontrast zum Leben innerhalb ihrer Familie, beispielsweise wurde dort nur Norwegisch gesprochen. In Ihrer Jugend begann sie, gegen Vorurteile und Rassismus zu rebellieren.
Später arbeitete sie als Lehrerin und begann, ihre eigene Kultur wiederzuentdecken. Das ist etwas, das sie generell in ihren Texten reflektiert, die in der Regel in samischer Sprache vorgetragen werden.
Musikalisch integriert sie nicht nur Joik und Jazz, sondern auch Elemente von Funk, Folk und Pop. Percussion spielt ebenfalls eine wichtige Rolle in ihrer Musik. Sie setzt die schamanistische Gesangspraxis ihres Volkes kreativ um, indem sie für andere Kulturen offen ist und gerne unterschiedliche Stile und Kulturen miteinander verbindet.
Sie unterstützt ihr Volk, das über Norwegen, Schweden, Finnland und Russland verteilt ist, setzt sich für Umweltschutz und für den Zusammenhalt ein und ist als Botschafterin dieser Kultur in der ganzen Welt unterwegs und aktiv.
Ihre Texte handeln teilweise von der anmutigen Natur der Arktis, teilweise sind Elemente von Liebesliedern mit dabei, wie in dem obigen Musikstück “I come from the other side” (Ich komme von der anderen Seite).
Teilweise setzt sie sich auch musikalisch für Umweltschutz ein, wie in dem obigen Video “Gula Gula”, (Hear the voices of the Foremothers/Höre die Stimmen der Vormütter.. sie fragen dich, warum die Erde verbraucht und vergiftet ist… sie erinnern dich daran, woher du gekommen bist), das darauf aufmerksam macht, wie zerbrechlich die Erde ist.
Sie hat mit vielen bekannten Musikern zusammengearbeitet und viele wichtige Preise erhalten.
